The new cell phone era begins!

I've been out of work for a while, so I haven't had a chance to "sample" many of the new tech devices that have come out lately... But Papa needs a new cell phone, and there are a couple of very worthy models coming out soon that'll make my wait worth while Laughing out loud . To replace my aging Palm 755p; the Palm Pre was always my favorite candidate, but wifey didn't want me to jump ship from VZ to Sprint (the only provider of the Pre as of this writing). The Pre is coming to VZ 'round the first of the year (2010) however, so IF the Pre is my heir-apparent device (and that's a big 'if'), my wait won't be much longer.

But here's the thing... VZ is coming out with something equally intriguing at the end of THIS month, and like the Pre it's a Linux-based device, but on a more 'open' platform... Google's Android phone OS. Indeed, the new model is the Motorola Droid, and it will have the most up-to-date version of the Android OS offered anywhere (2.0 ). Verizon is pitting this model against Apple's iPhone; that's how confident Google, VZ and the newly reborn Moto are in their new smartphone.

Up to now, the Palm Pre was the only smartphone offered by any provider that had multitasking and a unique and fast web surfing experience. They're promising these powerful features on the Droid, along with 10,000 applications available for the phone/platform. I'm not sure how many applications there are for the Palm Pre (as of now), but I do know that this seems to be a subject rife with complaints from current Pre owners... Not enough apps available (yet).

I'm going to check out the list of Android applications tonight, and see what's being offered... Possibly I won't have to wait quite as long to replace my old Palm device. I've loved the PalmOS for over 10 years now, and I know that the new 'WebOS' for Palm shows lots of promise. But I foresee a big fight coming in the cell phone OS market in 2010, and I think WinMo will have its face full of dust when it's all over. WebOS and Android will be the major players for the coming year Wink .
